I do usually try to arrange some sort of Thanksgiving gathering for non-married American friends in Beijing (to give myself an excuse for an early turkey feast, without any of the often unwelcome cultural - family - baggage attaching to an English Christmas celebration), but..... this year I have been too preoccupied with work and illness to get anything fixed up. And none of my American friends seem to be up for anything anyway - either "not free" this evening, or already have other plans.Oh well - I suppose I do need to lose some weight, really.
Anyway, a belated Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American friends!

I did a couple of hours from home, and spent the day wishing I was in the office instead.

It was fine. Actually a very pleasant dinner round at E&S's place.
I just am somewhat on edge, and being told by family that you are working too much, and that it is all a macho pose is more than a little frustrating. Especially when repeated.
TBC, agreed.
"don't work too much" combined with the work ethic they instilled in me doesn't mesh well.
what do they want? I wish they'd figure it out and stick to one mantra.
(p.s. you have family in VA?? or this is all over the phone? i get mine over the phone... doesn't make it any less frustrating.)

Well, I was "too lazy" to cross town again, to an area with no decent restaurants, in the height of the rush hour, when I'd only just got back from a 7-hour journey from the other end of the country.
You didn't tell me you were going to eat on Nanluoguxiang!!! I was in fact having a sad, solitary supper a couple of hundred yards away from you. Miscommunication. Boo.

Thanks, Froog. Thanksgiving is truly my favorite holiday, and so I'm sorry that you didn't get to experience it this year.
As for being badgered by family, did anyone else experience mother-in-law "I want a grandbaby so start now" pressure? No? It was just me? Really? Well, you're obviously not doing Thanksgiving right.
I suppose my own fondness for Thanksgiving is often spiced with a little schadenfreude, when I find myself sharing a family holiday with a family that is not my own, and enjoying all the little feuds and frictions from the sidelines.
Christmas may become increasingly like that for me too, now that I don't have any family of my own any more.
How many turkeys did the ILs bring you, OMG??
My mother used to invite a family friend for Christmas almost every year. To do a good turn but mostly because she said that we all behaved better when there was a 'guest' in the house... And she was right.
I once spent Christmas alone and, well, I can't recommend it. So be sure to offer your 'peace keeping' services as often as possible to families such as mine.

They brough no turkeys, just deer on a stick, aka venison kabobs. That's how they roll.
