With ironic, sinister symmetry, the celebrity artist/activist was incarcerated on the same day that my friend Wu Yuren was finally released from 10 months' detention.
Now, like Wu, he's been released on extremely restrictive 'bail' terms - but could face re-arrest at any moment. He was detained incommunicado from April 3rd to June 22nd 2011.

"Released on parole" after 10 months; "parole" lifted another year later. The original charges against him were apparently dropped without his trial ever being formally concluded.

What fascinates me about this picture is the flattening of perspective - this is actually the inside of a conical metal lampshade, and yet it appears almost two-dimensional.
The ping-pong ball-like 'crater' is a bit of a mystery too: no such blemish was visible on the outside of the shade.
And yes, I am commenting 'anonymously' on my own blog - don't ask.

[as I was reading the comment, I was totally wondering how this 'anonymous' knew what you had taken a photo of - i switched windows to see if you'd provided an explanation in the post that I missed - but no explanation. then i get to the last para. :) ]
